Dear Friends,
It's that time of year again! We get all dressed up...and have somewhere great to go! Our annual St. Andrew's ball is on the 18th of November in 3 weeks time. For those of you who have been before, you know it's not to be missed. For anyone who loves Scotland and all things Scottish, the night of the ball is the next best thing to going to Scotland itself. Without setting foot out of Athens, you will be in good Scottish company, eat great Scottish food, enjoy bagpipes and a traditional Scottish band and witness cheerful Scottish dancing by not only Scots but nationalities from all over the world. Don't worry if you haven't a clue how to do Scottish dancing, half of the fun is when a kilted man appears out of nowhere and pulls you off in the right direction!
The price of the ticket has remained the same. For 75 euros you get a
4 course meal with seconds for anyone who can manage it and unlimited wine, spirits, beer and soft drinks. Coffee, tea, chocolates and Scottish shortbread follow. Most important is the satisfaction of helping to raise valuable funds for children's charities. We have a fabulous time on the night but our ball is also our way of helping those who are less fortunate than ourselves. Kivotos youth centre alone has received 23,000 euros from our society in the last 4 years.
I have attached a flyer of our event. Please feel free to circulate it.
I look forward to seeing you all soon!
Sarah Gilhespie
Secretary
The St. Andrew's Society of Athens

The Ergastiri Annual Fair will take place in Platia Kotzia (near
Omonia and Athens Town Hall) on Saturday, 27th May, from 10am until
about 6pm. The Embassy participates with an Irish stall at which we
sell Irish products and produce. We will serve lovely, cold Murphy's
Red with brown bread (handmade by society members) and smoked salmon
and, if we are lucky, some of David Steele's lovely sausage rolls!
The Ergastiri is a society of parents, guardians and friends of people
with mental disabilities. It provides work and accommodation for
these people and their annual fair is an important source of funding.
It is a very big fair and is very well organised and supported with
music and dance as well as international stalls.
What I am looking for from the members of the GIS is anything that I
could sell on the stall, such as books or preferably things Irish, to
add to what we already have. You can give me a call at the Embassy
(210 7232771 from 9am to 4pm) if you think you have anything that we
could sell and do come along to join the fun!!

Wednesday's lecture at the IIHSA (Dr. Maria Mili: "Greek Votive Offerings - Problems and Approaches") had to be postponed for urgent and unforeseeable reasons.
Instead of Wednesday, the 26th of April, it is now rescheduled for Tuesday, the 2nd of May, as always at 8pm at the IIHSA.
